A vigorous, spreading Japanese cherry tree which erupts in spring with billowing clusters of abundantly packed, fragrant pale pink flowers that nearly obscure its branches. Its semi-double blooms unfold a soft pink that fades to white, exuding the loveliest of floral perfume. The emerging bronze foliage provides added seasonal interest, maturing to bright green in summer before turning brilliant shades of orange, red, and brown in autumn. With its wide, spreading form smothered in clouds of delicate spring blossoms and excellent autumn foliage, ‘Hokusai’ is a dramatic, hardy, trouble-free cultivar, ideal for larger landscapes wanting a focal point with ornate flowers and fantastic long season appeal.
When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
