A spectacular, modest sized ornamental cherry tree whose upright form emerges cloaked in bronze-tinged foliage, then becomes blanketed with hundreds of petite, yet prolifically packed flowers along the slender branches in mid to late spring. The leaves mature to deep green in summer, providing continued seasonal interest and shade. Named for a historic Japanese feudal lord, ‘Asano’ tolerates most soils, and is easily maintained at a smaller size through pruning. For optimal autumn colour and the fullest floral display, plant in full sun.
When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
