A compact and attractive evergreen tree with glossy, deep green leaves, felted brown on the undersides. ‘Little Gem’ has a narrowly columnar habit and is modest in height (8m/24ft), making it perfect for small gardens or as a specimen plant. The standout feature of this magnolia is its large, fragrant white flowers that unfurl in summer and can reach up to 20cm (8”) in diameter. The blooms are followed by cone-like fruits that add interest to the tree in the autumn. A low maintenance plant that is easy to care for, which prefers a sheltered, sunny spot, and is drought tolerant once established.
Garden care: Plant in a sheltered spot, away from strong winds. Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in spring. The best time to plant is in April, adding plenty of compost to the planting hole, in a sheltered spot. Mulch in spring with manure or leafmould, especially on dry soils.
