- Garden care: Each year after the plant has flowered, take out any dead, diseased or damaged shoots and apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant. If you need to prune, do so just after flowering to avoid losing flowers the following year, which are produced on the previous year’s growth.

Azara serrata is a medium-sized evergreen shrub with an attractive, compact form. It has oval, glossy leaves with serrated edges and produces pom-pom clusters of tiny, fragrant yellow flowers in summer occasionally followed by white berries during a long, warm summer if placed against a southerly, sheltered wall. Try planting with Ceanothus which flowers at the same time and enjoys a similar sunny aspect, for a stunning yellow and blue combination.
