- Position: Full sun
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: Average
- Flowering period: March to April
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
- Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. While fully hardy, late frosts can damage early flowers – if extreme or prolonged cold is forecast, wrap overnight with horticultural fleece to preserve the blossom. ‘Sultane’ prefers minimal pruning, like most plum trees (to which almonds are related).
A lovely heritage variety of self-fertile almond, introduced to the UK in the 18th century. Its early white spring flowers are plentiful and boldly raspberry-centred. ‘Sultane’ requires a warm summer in a sunny, sheltered position, resulting in high-quality sweet almonds with soft shells suitable for making almond milk, oil, butter, flour, or paste.
